EU Parliament Expands Corporate Sustainability Obligations
Per this article, on June 1 2023, the EU Parliament adopted an amendment to the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive of 2022.
The proposed rules expand companies’ due diligence obligations beyond their own activities to include their value-chain-including suppliers as well as any entities related to sale, distribution or transportation. Covered companies would have to mitigate any adverse impacts as a result of value chain relationships by changing company business models, providing support to small and medium-sized entities (SMEs) in the value chain, or seeking contractual assurances from partners.
The original obligation requires large companies operating in the EU to conduct due diligence to identify, prevent, mitigate or end negative impacts on human rights and the environment, including in particular pollution, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation, as well as labor exploitation, slavery and child labor. Covered entities would be required to produce climate transition plans to align their business models and corporate strategies with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
ExpandOS Will Pursue Sustainability Certification, Carbon Neutrality and ESG Compliance
Transformation Packaging LLC (TPL) of Hebron, OH, makes ExpandOS (https://expandos.com/), a sustainably sourced, paper-based protective packaging material that replaces bubble cushioning and foam. Gulfstream Aerospace, Cummins Diesel, Epson, and many other companies in automotive, ceramics, glass, and tableware industries have turned away from single-use plastics and adopted ExpandOS to protect their valuable products during shipment. TPL will work with Edenark Group to attain the Edenark Group ISO 14001 environmental sustainability certification. TPL is already recognized by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (“SFI”) under the SFI 2022 Certified Sourcing Standard. Once certified sustainable, TPL will further help others improve their environmental profiles, sustainability commitments, and Scope 1 and 3 performance, through their use of the ExpandOS packaging material.
The Edenark Group ISO 14001 is the world’s premier environmental sustainability certification program and allows SMEs (small to mid-sized enterprises) the ability to attain the world’s most popular environmental certification standard via a program designed and priced specifically for them. Edenark Group also helps clients pursue carbon neutrality and ESG compliance, using the Edenark Group ISO 14001 as a foundation for long term compliance.
The program, which allows companies to progressively improve at a pace that works for their needs, helps the organization define how it interacts internally, externally, and with the environment. It incorporates energy/waste/water, employee health and performance enhancement, community involvement, procurement and suppliers, compliance and regulations, emergency/security, and stakeholder engagement. Benefits include creating a culture of continual improvement, stakeholder engagement, lower costs, higher revenues and profits, improved employee performance, and…… doing the right thing for the environment and current and future generations.
“ExpandOS is leading the movement to replace single use plastics in protective packaging material and to enable high volume parcel shippers to use a paper-based product that outperforms plastics in cost, protection, labor, and environmental impact” said David Allon, president of Transformation Packaging. “We are dedicated to the sustainability movement across all sectors of the economy and believe we can have a tremendous impact on plastic waste generated by parcel shipments. The Edenark Group ISO 14001 platform shares our vision. We look forward to engaging with Edenark to benefit our investors, our clients, our employees, our company and our community.”
“When an organization pursues, and attains, the Edenark Group ISO 14001 sustainability certification, they are not just doing it to see their costs go down and revenues and profits go up. They are setting a higher bar for their organization and sending a signal to all those around them,” says David Goodman, CEO of Edenark Group. “They are agreeing to adhere to the world’s Gold standard for sustainability certification; are choosing to be a leader and part of the solution, not the problem; and are joining an elite fraternity of over 300,000 organizations, in over 150 countries, that have committed to continually improving in every way.”

Sustainability Certification is a Powerful, and Financially Beneficial, Competitive Differentiation Tool for SMEs
As reported in a study by the Symbola Foundation, an environmental sustainability certification brings benefits in operations, financial performance, customer relations, vendor relations, community relations and government relations.
Reviewing certified SMEs versus non-certified, it reported that environmentally certified sustainable SMEs grew 20x their non-certified peers. This included a +75% revenue growth differential for certified sustainable SMEs.
A key point was the slow adoption of environmental sustainability certification for SMEs. With larger companies, most already have a certified environmental sustainability program, so competitive differentiation is harder. But, with SMEs, adoption of environmental sustainability certification has been slower, so the opportunity for certified companies to competitively differentiate versus their non-certified peers has been greater.
Are you listening?
Are you listening to your customer?
88% of consumers want you, a company selling them products/services, to help them make a difference, by being more environmentally friendly.
This is consistent with other studies that show that 87% of the largest buying group (Under 40 Consumer) and 71% of ALL consumers, will move their business to a certified sustainable company.
25% of consumers have already changed vendors due to their desire to find a certified sustainable company. Did you win any of that business?
The next 20 – 43% of consumers moving their business is in play right now. Will you be a giver or taker for this market share?
Large organizations are mandated by their own sustainability programs to move their vendor relationships to certified sustainable companies. As vendors, this will be a curse for some and an opportunity for others. Which will it be for your company?
Your customer is speaking. Are you listening?
World Environment Day Question – What are your obligations to Vanuatu?
Vanuatu is a tropical island nation in the South Pacific. They have declared a climate emergency due to the impact of global warming – fearing rising sea levels and severe weather will destroy the nation.
First question – Are the polluting countries of the world responsible?
Per this article, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a landmark resolution requesting the International Court of Justice issue an advisory opinion as to the obligations of other governments.
What do you think? Is Vanuatu just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or do the other nations of the world have some responsibility and obligation to help them?
Second question – If you feel other nations should help Vanuatu, how deep do we go down that rabbit hole?
- Is it just for Vanuatu, or for any country impacted by climate change (which, one could argue, would be all nations)?
- How far is the look-back – 5 years? 100 years?
- And if the world’s governments are responsible to each other, then who pays and who gets paid?
- Are the citizens and businesses in those nations also responsible….leading directly to your doorstep?
- Does this ultimately move us closer to a climate tax?

Human v Natural Influences – Impact on Global Temperature
Based on a World Bank study discussed here, over the past 150 years, natural influences on global temperature have remained consistently between -0.5° and +0.5°F. In effect, a few years up and a few years down, but never varying much.
The human influence had an even smaller variation, -0.2° and +0.2°F, through the 1920s.
From the 1930s to 1960s, the human influence did not have a negative year, staying between +0.2° and +0.4°F.
Since the 1960s, however, the human influence has steadily grown, to +1.4°F around 2010.
With the human influence so significant, if the natural influence has an ‘up’ year, like it has had from 2000 – 2010 (possibly impacted by human influence) the combination of the two puts us over the +2.0°F threshold that science is telling us will be painful for all of us.

3 Revolutions Currently In Play – Video of FutureTense talk by Gerd Leonhard
No matter what side of the aisle you sit, this video talk by Gerd Leonhard should be worth your time.
Here are a few of the points made:
There are 3 Revolutions in play
- Digital / AI
- Sustainability / Climate – 100x of digital/AI
- Purpose (people, planet, prosperity, purpose)
In short, Leonhard believes our climate problems will cost some money and we will have pain for the next 20 years, but they are solvable.
He feels the Digital / AI problem will be harder to solve, as machine learning is growing exponentially and we have no controls in place.
The Purpose (People, Planet, Prosperity, Purpose) Revolution will not be driven by governments and corporations, but by citizens demanding change.
As to the Digital / AI Revolution
- There are four subsets – Info tech, Bio tech, Energy / Climate tech, AI tech
- Person using AI will be more efficient / This will allow companies to reduce workforces
- Machines will take our routines / Any job that can be automated, will be
- AI will reduce/eliminate these jobs: bank tellers, clerks in many industries, administrative assistants, record-keeping, accounting, payroll, bookkeeping, legislators, officials, finance, insurance, sales
- Fastest growing jobs: Anything in sustainability / climate, AI and machine learning, information security, fintech engineers, scientists, robotics engineers, business intelligence, electrotechnology engineers, agriculture equipment operators, digital transformation
- AI will bring garbage, lies, distortion and damage – it fabricates truth
- We won’t know if the anchor person on the news is real or a fabrication – a synthetic world
- Social media will feed on AI, as social media promotes bad news 7x good news – why? We watch
- GBT4 will have more knowledge than a human and can reason – We should want machine competence, not machine consciousness
- We will have Unlimited technology firepower by 2030 (6.5 years from now) – What about Safety? Security? Ethics? Control?
- Research on how AI aligns with human values lags far behind progress on technical capabilities – In short, it is growing faster than our ability to manage it within our values – chart
As to the Sustainability / Climate Revolution
- Within 20 years all the middle countries in the globe will be uninhabitable due to heat – chart
- Climate Change will cost 2-3% of global GDP, or $150T/year, for the next 10-15 years
- We will soon have a carbon tax
- We have the necessary technology to correct the climate problem…if we want to
- The next 1000 unicorns will come from sustainability / climate
- Sustainability / climate will have 100x the jobs of Digital / AI
- +100 million new jobs will be created for Sustainability / Climate
As to the Purpose Revolution
- Driven by heat, we will see hundreds of millions of climate change refugees migrating north
- There will be Extinction Rebellion uprisings around the world
- Coal, Oil and Gas will have a harder time surviving
- Banks that support fossil fuels will also see brand rejection
- New stock markets will emerge, supporting Purpose investing
- Gen Y, Z and Alpha will drive change
Video Testimonial on Positive ROI from Edenark Group ISO 14001 Program
We, at Edenark Group, do a terrible job of explaining some of the components of our service. Often, our clients do a better job.
This video has one of our partners asking for an update from one of our new clients. She explains that, immediately after she signed up, and before we start the certification application process, we prepared and published, a post for her business; as we do for all our clients.
The financial value to her business, of just that one post, exceeds the cost of her entire certification effort. As such, even before we get her business certified, she is enjoying a positive ROI.
How many vendors do you have that are delivering a positive ROI before they even deliver their full service to you?
We go for smiles and we got one from her!
If you would like to smile, contact us.
