CPL Group USA Inc. has renewed its Environmental Sustainability Certification through 2023

CPL Group USA  heads a group of companies that are synergistically aligned to provide end-to-end electric grid infrastructure management services to commercial, institutional, industrial and residential buildings.  CPL’s founders have been in the Energy Management business for over 35 years, positioning the company to national prominence in the industry. The company has continued its environmental sustainability commitment by renewing and extending its Edenark Group ISO 14001 sustainability certification through 2023.

The Edenark Group ISO 14001 is the world’s premier environmental sustainability certification program and allows SMEs (small to mid-sized enterprises) the ability to attain the world’s most popular environmental certification standard via a program designed and priced specifically for them.   Edenark Group also helps clients pursue carbon neutrality and ESG compliance, using the Edenark Group ISO 14001 as a foundation for long term compliance.

The program, which allows companies to progressively improve at a pace that works for their needs, helps the organization define how it interacts internally, externally, and with the environment.  It incorporates energy/waste/water, employee health and performance enhancement, community involvement, procurement and suppliers, compliance and regulations, emergency/security, and stakeholder engagement.  Benefits include creating a culture of continual improvement, stakeholder engagement, lower costs, higher revenues and profits, improved employee performance, and…… doing the right thing for the environment and current and future generations.

“We are a leader in our space and our innovative approach to infrastructure management helps commercial real estate owners set and achieve their sustainability goals,” says Dario Gristina, Chairman/CEO of CPL Group USA.  “We are passionate about all businesses and buildings, no matter what their size, having a profitable sustainability program.  We also recognize the impact Local Law 97 and other regulations will have on organizations; and are a solution for our clients who, as part of their own sustainability programs, need their vendors to also be certified sustainable.”

“In 2022, while also rebuilding from the impact of the pandemic, our team was able to complete ten projects, including reducing paper, reducing light cost, reducing HVAC cost, reducing plastic, increasing digital invoicing, reduction in travel cost, recycling.  Further, the Green Team has an exciting list of projects scheduled for 2023,” added Gristina.

“CPL Group USA, Inc. is a wonderful example of what the world needs more of – an organization that produces a superior product, supports its current stakeholders, shows it cares about future generations via its commitment to sustainability certification, and makes more money due to its sustainability programs,” said David Goodman, CEO of Edenark Group.  “When an organization executes the Edenark Group ISO 14001 sustainability certification, as CPL Group USA, Inc. is doing, it not only benefits the environment, but it also benefits its own operation,” added Goodman.

EU’s New Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) Will Change Global Landscape

Per this article, on 10 November 2022, the EU parliament adopted the final Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) which will require companies in the EU to publically disclose information around their environmental, social and governance matters.

This will immediately impact approximately 50,000 companies, up 5x from the current 11,700 who are reporting.

Although SMEs will have a few more years before they are required to comply with the regulations, the trickle-down from companies that are immediately impacted will happen far sooner to their SME vendors, as those companies will need sustainable vendors in order to complete their own reporting.

With the US Federal Government implementing its sustainability measures at roughly the same time, there is opportunity for SMEs who wish to take market share, to use sustainability as a competitive differentiation tool.

Will you see Opportunity in this Deloitte Study on the rise of Sustainability?

A few key takeaways from this article on a 2022 Deloitte study:

  • Climate change is now in 78% of corporate reports; 2.5x the 30% in 2021

  • 90% are now addressing TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures)

  • 82% disclosed at least some Scope 3 emissions (which impacts SME vendors)

  • An additional 16% plan to report on Scope 3 (meaning, by next year, 98% will be asking their vendors to report on carbon emissions)

  • 90% reported their purpose, up from 41% five years ago

  • 100% incorporated the importance of employee wellbeing

If you are a SME and thinking, “This is not going to impact me; it is only happening in big companies”, read the Scope 3 bullets again.  For an organization to report their Scope 3, they need carbon emission data from their vendors (which is the vendor’s Scope 1).  If you are a vendor to a large company, your phone is going to ring.  They are going to want to see your carbon emission data, want you to prove you are pursuing a sustainability program, and want to see that you have a carbon reduction/neutrality plan incorporated in your sustainability plan.

This is an opportunity for SMEs looking to take market share.

How to take Market Share as a Supply Chain Vendor

If you are a supply chain vendor and looking to grow market share, how are you differentiating your services?  Are you waiting for a competitor to screw up or are you dropping your price?

Ever wondered if there was a better way?

This article, titled ‘In the race against time to cut emissions, companies’ supply chains are key’, asks how companies around the world, who are committing to net-zero emission targets, will achieve them.

Given that

  • The SEC is now including Scope 3 emissions in its new proposed reporting structure; and
  • 80 – 90% of emissions are in the supply chain…

….your prospects are going to be searching for supply chain vendors that are certified sustainable and have a carbon neutral performance plan because a) they need it for their own commitment; and/or b) they need it because the SEC requires it.

Either way, as a supply chain vendor, if you want to be noticed and take market share, the #1 thing you can do is wave a flag saying, “We are certified sustainable and have a carbon emissions report; and can help you meet your requirements”.

As an example of supply chain vendors who have taken this to heart, here are three small vendors in a supply chain; all certified sustainable and successfully promoting their certification to their prospects and clients:

– TruPayroll (a SME payroll company, using Wholesale Payroll as a vendor and serving thousands of small businesses) was the first of the three small companies in this supply chain to become certified sustainable and is championing the benefit to its clients…

– DataSetGo (which is small software company that sells through Wholesale Payroll to, among others, TruPayroll), saw the benefits achieved by TruPayroll, and became certified sustainable…

– Wholesale Payroll (which is a SME SaaS, sitting between DataSetGo and TruPayroll) saw the benefit to both DataSetGo and TruPayroll and joined them by becoming certified sustainable.

All three are now co-promoting being a certified sustainable supply-chain service group and are benefitting from the market support of same.

Harvard Business Review: Startups Need an ESG Strategy

Per this article in Harvard Business Review, startups need an ESG strategy.

Startups have an advantage over larger companies who have established systems.  With a startup, the leadership can build a sustainability / ESG program from the start, avoiding costly rework later.

Key points:

  • Start with the purpose of your startup (Why does the world need you?)

  • Then marry it with ESG (this is how you run your business and deliver on your purpose)

  • Identify your risks and use your ESG plan to help address them

  • Start with the ‘E’ and target becoming carbon neutral (investors need you to be carbon neutral / Net Zero). This is why we recommend starting with your sustainability plan first

  • Then build the ‘S’ to ensure you connect with your employees

  • Finally, for your ‘G’, you will need a diverse board and tight data security and privacy rules

Our strong recommendation for all companies, including startups, ties with the above:

  • Start with your sustainability commitment. If done with the right standard and certification program, this is the highest ROI for you and delivers the foundation for the balance of your program

  • Then pursue your carbon neutrality certification. This flows out of your sustainability program and is supported by same

  • Then develop the ‘S’ and the ‘G’

  • Close out with your Net Zero certification
