This is just the beginning
We are seeing new heat records around the world every week. This past week, in Southern Iran, the heat index (ie, how it feels) registered 156F. Our bodies cannot withstand north of 160F, so we are nearing the point of science fiction movies where we cannot go outside.
As this article states, it is only going to get worse.
We caused it; we can fix it.
Consumers want to know what your business is doing about it; and 7 out of 10 of them will move their business to a certified sustainable company, as they are rewarding companies that can prove they are part of the solution.
Besides doing the right thing for the environment, certified sustainable companies are growing up to 20x faster than their non-certified peers, due to consumer rewarding them for their actions.
If you want to be part of the solution, or want to satisfy consumer demand, watch this master class, then contact us.
How is a Race Against Time an Opportunity for You?
Per the latest Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we need to reduce our global emissions 45% by 2030 (78 months from now) if we are to keep global warming below 1.5°C.
This is an “All hands on deck” call because you are not going to like it when we tip over that threshold.
This report discusses the current state of affairs in the EU, which is better prepared than most of the world. Here are the key points:
- There is a persistent gap between transparency and action – 23% of companies in the study still lacked emission reduction targets.
- Though science-based targets (SBTs) are now mainstream, the main emissions producers still lack them – 87% of known emissions are still not being targeted.
- Net-zero targets remain in their nascent stage – 92% of companies do not yet have net zero targets.
- Energy efficiency is working and not negatively impacting revenues – Operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2) have gone down by 14%, while revenues have gone up 8%.
- Scope 3 is the key – 92% of known emissions are Scope 3.
How is this an opportunity for you?
- If you are a vendor to another company, you are part of its Scope 3.
- Per the above, Scope 3 is where the problem/opportunity is.
- For the world to meet its emissions goals, Scope 3 vendors need to step up.
- Companies, in need of reporting on their own emissions, need information from their Scope 3 vendors.
- This will force those companies (ie, your clients and prospects) to select vendors that can prove they are sustainable and have a carbon emissions program.
- Net, as time is short, if your company is certified sustainable and carbon neutral, you will help your clients and prospects satisfy their Scope 3 needs, while your peers fail to do so.
- You will take market share…..and have a hand in giving the next generation a fighting chance.

ESG Explained: Socially Conscious Capitalism and its Backlash
As we have reported, starting in Fiscal 2024, the EU will demand sustainability reports and audits for companies operating there.
The US SEC is finalizing its own reporting requirements.
By the end of 2023, it is expected that more than half the world’s economies will be requiring some level of reporting on sustainability.
This brings us to the elephant in the room – the political debate over ESG.
- First, as a refresher, sustainability is the E (ie, environment) of ESG.
- We DO NOT recommend a company initially pursue an ESG program. We recommend starting with sustainability certification, then carbon neutrality certification, then, a few years later, consider ESG and Net Zero. This will deliver the highest ROI and benefit to your company.
- At the corporate operating level (ie, on Main Street), sustainability is tremendously beneficial to a company.
- Further, at the operational level, ESG works and companies with ESG programs are out-performing their peers that do not have ESG programs.
- However, Wall Street saw an opportunity and tried to package and sell ESG Funds to the public. The questions associated with these funds are – A) How are companies evaluated/judged in order to be part of a fund? And, B) Should fund managers be allowed to invest the money of their clients to support environmental and social causes?
- The debate over these two points has become political, as this video explains.
At the end of the day, politics aside, the planet needs your help and by helping the planet, you will also be helping your company grow faster. This master class explains the benefits to you, the steps you should take, and what to look for in a program. Contact us with questions.
Study – Why is there so much talk, yet so little action, on sustainability and climate?
This article discusses a study on 14 million social media documents (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube), 330 million users (you are probably in the study) and 480 actions (ie, posting or commenting on a post), leading to this question:
- Why, despite increasingly obvious signs of climate change, are we not doing more?
The obstacles are as follows:
- Disconnected optimism
Rewards and centers ambitious – but unrealistic – ideas for solutions - Information gap
A lack of reliable and useful information promotes skepticism and a sense of powerlessness among citizens - Fear of downsides
An outsized focus on the negative consequences of action that can detract from genuine opportunities for change - Delegation of authority
The sense that tackling climate change is someone else’s job - Hopelessness
Feelings of defeat and pessimism, a sense that it is too late to do anything
Given that we help companies become environmentally certified sustainable, and besides helping the environment and future generations, certified sustainable companies make more money than their non-certified peers, we should have every company on the planet calling us. Yet, the fact is, less than 1% of SMEs pursue this opportunity to help themselves while helping the world.
We would add the following to the list:
- Fear of change – Most of us are not comfortable doing something new.
- Fear of lack of knowledge – Most business leaders do not feel confident they have enough information to make a decision.
- Fear of Time Commitment – Business leaders are afraid the process will take their team away from the Day Job.
At the end of the day, all these reasons contribute to lack of action, which is not just a risk to the planet, but also a lost opportunity for the business. This master class explains the benefits of becoming certified sustainable and also explains what to look for in a program. If a business follows this guide, it will be happy.
How Manufacturers can benefit from Sustainability
This article attempts to talk about why manufacturers must embrace sustainability, however below is more to the point.
Said simply, for a manufacturer to remain in business, and grow, it must
- Become more efficient / reduce costs – companies that are certified under our program MUST become more efficient.
- Become more attractive to B2B prospects – 97% of larger companies have sustainability programs and, via same, are mandated to use sustainable vendors when available (assuming quality and price are comparable). Net, becoming certified sustainable will make your offering more attractive to a large group of prospects you are currently not selling to.
- Become more attractive to B2C prospects – 70% of ALL consumers will leave their current brand and move to a product (assuming equal price and value) from a certified sustainable company. If your company wants to take market share, waving the “We are certified sustainable” flag is the highest ROI tool you have.
- Reduce its cost of money – Be it debt or equity, manufacturers always need money to grow. Certified sustainable companies pay less for their funds.
- Reduce its insurance cost – Certified sustainable companies are viewed as a lower risk, positively impacting insurance costs.
- Be compliant – As we have reported, governments around the world are creating sustainability regulations. This is no longer an ‘if’’, it is a ‘when’. The sooner a manufacturer is compliant, the sooner it can promote same to prospects.
- Be able to hire and retain talent – Certified sustainable companies are able to hire and retain better talent, at a lower cost, than their non-certified peers.
As a manufacturer, there is nothing you can do that will have a higher ROI than to become environmentally certified sustainable. This master class discusses the eight things you should look for in a program. If appealing, contact us.
Justification for 3rd party validation/certification
We’ve recently talked about Greenwashing and the fact that the majority of consumers do not believe a company’s claims if not supported by legitimate 3rd party validation/certification.
This article talks about a Yale study that grades companies on their decisions to exit or continue operations in Russia after the Ukraine invasion. In many cases, companies with F and D grades (ie, continuing to operate in Russia) promote their social responsibility on their websites. These are cases in point as to why consumers do not believe organizations that do not have 3rd party validation/certification of their claims.
If you commit the time and money to pursue any corporate cause, be it sustainability, carbon neutrality, net zero, social responsibility, ESG, et cetera, hire a legitimate organization to 3rd-party validate/certify your claims. This master class gives the 8 things you should look for in a program.
GREENHUSHING: Why Your Company’s Silence Can Kill Your Business
Article by Check Odulio, contributing writer.
Companies often face ridicule for greenwashing, where they exaggerate sustainability claims.
Fearing scrutiny, some choose to stay silent, resulting in a phenomenon known as greenhushing—when a company does not communicate its verified/certified sustainability efforts.
Be warned – companies guilty of greenhushing are starting to take the hits too.
Consumers are increasingly demanding that companies take a firm stance. In fact, 67% of Americans expect companies to stand up for social, cultural, and environmental issues.
Your company’s failure to speak up about sustainability can gradually erode your business.
In our previous article, we highlighted the increasing consumer demand for sustainability and that it’s happening faster.
- 70% of consumers are willing to change brands specifically for sustainability
- 25% of consumers have already changed brands due to sustainability
Is your business willing to gradually lose this much?
But as companies move towards sustainable practices, be wary that customers are doubtful of claims. As such, supporting evidence for any green claim is now becoming a must.
Dr. Andreas von der Gathen, co-CEO of Simon-Kucher, a renowned global consultancy firm emphasizes the need for it, “As expectations around sustainability climb, companies will face significant pressure to prove their sustainability credentials and continue to make it a central part of their value proposition.”
Obtaining a sustainability certification, such as the Edenark Group ISO14001 is a strategic move that can help your business thrive. Pursuing a sustainability certification program serves as tangible proof of your commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
If you’ve been putting off your plans to get a business sustainability certification and greenhushing, there’s no better time than now.
Stay ahead of your competition and the market or prepare to gradually lose your business.
Regardless of your size or industry, Edenark Group can help you acquire a global sustainability certification designed and priced for SMEs like you.

People should be at the Heart of Corporate Responsibility
We have stated for years that if your sustainability program does not include a people piece, it is not a sustainability program.
This article talks about how people should be at the heart of corporate responsibility.
We could not agree more.
At Edenark Group, our environmental sustainability program includes a people piece that is unrivaled –
You will not find a better sustainability program for your company. Within that program, you will not find a better people piece that helps your staff become happier, healthier and more productive.
Your Health – What Can Companies Do About EMF Exposure?
We are all exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMF) every day. Low levels of EMF are not considered dangerous for most people and the World Health Organization has established 5000 v/m as a guideline maximum exposure level.
However, most office work environments, with wireless equipment, computers, printers, routers, and cell phones, all producing EMF, can easily operate day in and day out at +100,000 v/m.
Further, there are all the machines in the neighboring offices; and their EMF travels through your walls.
That much radiation, day in and day out, is not good for your health.
What can be done?
Recently, Gym For The Brain moved into a new leased space. As part of its Edenark Group ISO 14001 sustainability certification program, we reviewed the EMF levels in the space it would be occupying; and seeing they were many times higher than the maximum exposure guideline, painted the entire space with EMF absorbing paint (pic 1 and pic 2). Then, painted a top-coat of regular paint.
By doing so, the EMF exposure for employees, clients and visitors is now less than 1% of what was previously radiating in that office space, and less than 10% of the WHO guideline exposure level.
All it took was a few gallons of EMF-absorbing paint to dramatically improve the wellness of that workplace environment for all.
