Com-ESCO™ has renewed its Environmental Sustainability Certification through 2023

Com-ESCO™ (http://www.com-esco.com/ ), a South Florida-based, licensed and insured general contractor and commercial Energy Services Company, and parent of Sustainable Performance Solutions (https://www.susperfsol.com/)  and Sea Coast Professional Window & Door (https://prowinfl.com/),  has continued its environmental sustainability commitment by renewing and extending its Edenark Group ISO 14001 sustainability certification through 2023.

The Edenark Group ISO 14001 is the world’s premier environmental sustainability certification program and allows SMEs (small to mid-sized enterprises) a program designed and priced specifically for them.

The program, which allows companies to progressively improve at a pace that works for their needs, helps the organization define how it interacts internally, externally, and with the environment.  It incorporates energy/waste/water, employee health and performance enhancement, community involvement, procurement and suppliers, compliance and regulations, emergency/security, and stakeholder engagement.  Benefits include creating a culture of continual improvement, stakeholder engagement, lower costs, higher revenues and profits, improved employee performance, and…… doing the right thing for the environment and current and future generations.

“We provide a full range of general contracting and ESCO services and are a leader in energy efficient construction”, said Mike Modica, principal in com-ESCO.  “We intimately know the sustainability space and via our various companies, provide products, services, auditing and credentialing, to a large number of clients, domestically and internationally.  We have worked with Edenark Group for years and our views, expectations and standards align with their views, expectations and standards,” added Modica.

“When an organization pursues, and attains, the Edenark Group ISO 14001 sustainability certification, they are not just doing it to see their costs go down and revenues and profits go up.  They are setting a higher bar for their organization and sending a signal to all those around them,” says David Goodman, CEO of Edenark Group.  “They are agreeing to adhere to the world’s Gold standard for sustainability certification; are choosing to be a leader and part of the solution, not the problem; and are joining an elite fraternity of over 300,000 organizations, in over 150 countries, that have committed to continually improving in every way.”

Harvard Law School – ESG Trends to Watch in 2023

This article talks about the following five trends to follow this year in the ESG space:

  • The Regulatory Tsunami Looks to Hit Shore – As we have reported, the increase in government regulations will start to have a bigger impact on the business community in 2023. Key point – This is just ESG.  This is not all-inclusive.  This does not include carbon emissions or sustainability.  As reported, these laws can domino, with one influencing another.

  • U.S. Politics Heat Up – As we have reported, there a huge gap between the operational benefit of ESG at the company level; versus the financial investment market’s attempt to use ESG as a new shinny toy for investors without fully understanding how to define and verify ESG in the companies they include in their ESG funds. Key point – ESG standards and reporting will improve at the operational level; while, short term, given the anti-ESG political movement, most companies will down-play their ESG programs until the smoke clears.

  • ESG Data Evolves – The combination of the above two trends leads to this point, which is that stronger ESG-evaluating tools are emerging, to improve accuracy. Key point – The need for accurate ESG data will increase and tools to provide said accuracy will also continue to evolve.

  • Growing ESG-Related Allegations and Claims – There will be more claims of misrepresentation and wrongdoing, and more litigation on same. Key point – The easy days of Greenwashing are nearing an end as the need to support your claims with a globally-accepted 3rd party certification/validation/oversight are upon us.

  • Proxy Season Brings Issues into Focus – Many of the shareholder proxy votes focus on ESG topics. Large investors use proxy votes to impact corporate direction on environment and social efforts.  Key point – Environmental and social issues will be subjected to greater scrutiny and will receive stricter and more specific voting to hold companies accountable.

Let’s Start the Week With a Happy Jump – Countries Agree to Historic Oceans Treaty!

In recent weeks we have shared some scary climate reports; so it is wonderful to share this report.

Per this article, a two-decade-long negotiation between nearly 200 countries has concluded in a treaty to protect marine life in international waters!

  • The treaty creates marine protected areas
  • It will help us protect 30% of global oceans by 2030 (No, it’s not 100%, but it’s better than 0%)

Now, each country must formally adopt the treaty, so the work is not done.  But, it is a great start!

Avoid Greenwashing Risk

For organizations that have created a home-grown sustainability program, self-certify, then promote themselves as sustainable, there is risk of being exposed for Greenwashing.

This risk is growing.

However, per this article, an Edenark Group commercial partner, Before3020, Inc., and its partner, Hong Bao Media, have developed a wonderful service for you – they will audit your sustainability program and communication for vulnerabilities and provide you direction on how to correct your deficiencies, saving you potential embarrassment.

“This course offering is best compared to a corporate sustainability “hackathon”; we find the vulnerabilities in the sustainability efforts and communications to save you from embarrassing and potentially costly allegations of greenwashing”, noted Robert van Zwieten, Before3020, Inc.’s fractional COO/CFO, and a Board member of Hong Bao Media.

If you are starting today, clearly it is better for your brand and more cost-effective to become certified under a globally-respected program.  This PPP gives you direction on what kind of a program to seek.  But, if you already have a self-made program and recognize it might expose you, this ‘sustainability hackathon’ by Before3020 Inc and Hog Bao Media is a great way forward.

Want to be part of a $100 Trillion Opportunity?

This podcast, titled “Why sustainability is THE business opportunity”, covers a lot of ground and talks about:

Key Global Challenges to transition our world, all impacted by sustainability

  • Digitization
  • Globalization
  • Urbanization
  • Demographic Change
  • Climate Change
  • Business Model Innovation
  • Wellness/Health

Out of this, just on its own, Climate Change is a +$100 trillion opportunity over the next 25 years.  Wrap sustainability around it and the others, and you have where your company needs to be.

Why does becoming sustainable help a company?

  • Customer support
  • Higher employee engagement
  • Lower operating costs
  • Less waste
  • Lower money costs

Taking the last point (lower money costs) further

  • Lenders assess risk
  • Sustainability lowers risk
  • The cost of money to sustainable companies is, therefore, lower
  • Soon, it will be hard to borrow if you cannot prove you are sustainable

Being able to prove your company is sustainable (ie, being certified) will put you in the middle of the greatest opportunity of our time.

Ready to have wet feet (and knees)?

Per this article, titled, “The beginning of the end?: Scientists sound the alarm as Antarctic sea ice hits record low for second year running”, the sea ice in Antarctica is melting at a record level.

That’s bad enough.  But add it to this article, titled “So-called Doomsday Glacier is in trouble, scientists say after finding surprising formations under ice shelf”, which says if the Thwaites Glacier, which is the size of Florida and nicknamed ‘Doomsday Glacier’, collapses, it could cause an immediate 2 foot rise and a possible longer-term 10 foot rise in sea level.

It is possible the glacier will not break free and all will be fine.  However, a 2021 study suggested it could fracture within five years.

If global warming continues to melt the sea ice, as discussed in the first article, odds are, Thwaites’ grip will weaken.

If your company wants to do more than cross fingers, contact us.  We can help you help Thwaites not be so Doom and Gloom, which will help all of us.

Dementia risk rises if you live with chronic pain

Some people have asked why we uniquely have a ‘people piece’ incorporated in our sustainability program.  In response, we ask – “How can you have a corporate sustainability program and not address the employees?” For most companies, your people are your biggest cost, biggest risk, biggest time commitment and biggest opportunity.  If we can help your people become happier, healthier and more productive, not only are they more efficient and costs go down, but they are more willing to help others and help the planet.

The Big 5 (insomnia, stress, anxiety, physical pain and mental acuity) collectively cause your company to lose around 5% of your annual GNP, or about $10,000 per year per full time employee.

This CNN article talks about dementia risk rising if you live with chronic pain, such as cancer, arthritis, back pain, neck pain, nerve pain, et cetera.

Further, if you have chronic pain in multiple locations (ie, both knees), your risk rises significanty.

Sleeping less than 6 hours in midlife raises the risk of dementia by 30%.

In the US, 20% of all adults live with long-lasting pain, impacting their risk of dementia.  Other countries have similar studies.

There are not many of us who do not know someone suffering from dementia.  This is a global problem.

This is why we have A Better World Starts With Me and Gym For The Brain as part of our service.  We address the Big 5 and help individuals become happier, healthier and more productive.  In turn, this helps your company.
